Many people think if they can’t get to a face to face exercise class it’s not worth bothering, but if the pandemic taught us one thing, it’s that there’s a lot of value to be found in online exercise programmes. We know that doing something is always better than doing nothing, which is often the alternative if we can’t find a class that works for us.
I know many of my clients struggle to motivate themselves to do an on demand class, and many find it easier to get to an in person class, but I think live online classes offer a good middle ground - you have the accountability of an in person class (i.e. you’re on a register for a set day and time and the teacher is expecting you in class), but you don’t need to travel, you’re not impacted by weather, childcare, traffic etc etc.
If you can’t find a class near you that you like, live online can also be a really great option. You can join from anywhere - you just need a laptop/tablet (or even a phone if needs be) and a mat.
Like many teachers, I started my live online classes in the pandemic. Unlike a lot of teachers, I kept them going, as I have clients who don’t live near to my group classes and others who just find online is much more convenient and takes less time out of their evening. They’re also a really great way for my clients to catch up any classes they’ve missed if they can’t easily travel to another class, and you can still join if you’re away from home.
Some people feel live online isn’t as useful, as the teacher can’t see everything you do and correct you in the same way, but if you set your camera up so you’re clearly visible you’d be surprised by how much we can see, and an experienced teacher will know the common things to look out for in any given exercise so will be cuing these things anyway.
At this time of year when it’s cold and dark outside, you don’t even have to leave the house. You can come in your pjs if you want to! ;)
My top tip for succeeding in doing your online classes is to get ready as if you are going out - get your gym kit on, get your mat and device set up and avoid the sofa at all costs!
